Oral Issues To Be Aware Of As You Age

As the years go by, our bodies go through various changes. These changes can lead to a list of serious health issues — some we may not be aware of until it’s too late. Here are three major oral health problems to keep in mind.

Wearing down enamel. All that chewing and grinding can take a toll on your health over the years. Not to mention any trauma or complications you went through. To combat enamel loss, try fixing habits that can wear down the outer protective layer of your teeth. This includes chewing on hard items like ice and pens, grinding your teeth, clenching your jaw, and playing high-impact sports without a mouthguard.

Dry mouth. Whether it’s your age or the medications you’re taking, when you get older you’re more prone to dry mouth. Saliva is essential in washing away food particles and bacteria and keeping your teeth and gums happy and healthy. If you begin experiencing dry mouth, drink plenty of water, and before you swallow, try to hold the water in your mouth for a few seconds to rinse away any loose bacteria.

Gum health. Over time, your gums can grow weak, which can attribute to gingivitis, gum disease, and other oral health issues. To avoid any problems with your gums, avoid smoking, brush your teeth twice a day, and floss at least once a day. If left uncleaned, plaque and tartar will build up and bacteria will grow, which will lead to infections.

Taking all of this into account, it’s important to remember to schedule an appoint regularly with our dentist.
