4 Harmful Habits That Affect Your Teeth

Everyone has a habit that’s hard to break. But is yours affecting your oral health? If one of your habits is listed below, it’s time to make a change! Luckily we have a few tips to help you.

1. Nail Biting

When it comes to a manicure, stick to nail files, not your teeth. You could damage your gums or chip your teeth. Try wearing a mouthguard or apply bitter tasting nail polish to deter you away from your nails.

2. Brushing Too Hard

The ADA suggests brushing your teeth for two minutes, two times a day. But don’t  brush too hard during this time. When you do, you risk gum recession and if you have braces you can end up damaging your wires or brackets. Use a soft toothbrush and try to reduce the force of your brush on your gums.

3. Grinding and Clenching

Grinding and clenching your teeth can cause muscle tenderness and joint pain. Both relaxation exercises and a mouthguard can help protect your mouth.

4. Using Your Teeth as a Tool

Using your teeth to open bottles, packages, or cut through thread for instance is very dangerous. You put yourself at risk for chipped teeth or broken wires and brackets. Look for scissors instead — you’ll avoid costly appointment in the end!
