Getting Braces Put On: What To Expect On The Big Day

Getting braces can be a daunting experience for both adults and children, but there is no reason to be scared. The best way to calm any fears is by knowing exactly what to expect during and after your braces appointment.

During the Appointment

Your appointment will begin with the orthodontist methodically cleaning your teeth. They will then apply a special bonding glue to the front of your newly clean teeth. The brackets for the braces are then securely placed in this glue. Once everything is firmly in place, a wire will be threaded through the brackets. The final step is to attach rubber bands to the wires to help hold them in place. The average appointment typically takes between one and two hours.

After You Get Home

While the process of getting braces put on is not painful, you can still expect your mouth and teeth to be a little sore when you get home. Most patients report that this soreness lasts for only a few days. Luckily, there are several things you can do at home to stay comfortable.

Oral anesthetic gel and over-the-counter pain medication will help temporarily relieve most of the soreness. It’s also very important to regularly apply orthodontic wax to any brackets causing pain. This special wax will be given to you at the appointment. In addition to these pain relieving techniques, it’s important that you eat braces-approved foods. A few of the best foods to eat the day you get braces are macaroni and cheese, soup, scrambled eggs, and mashed potatoes

Now that you know the process of getting braces is not that bad, it’s time to schedule your appointment with Speaks Orthodontics! We will happily guide you through the entire process to deliver the beautiful smile everyone deserves.
