Bad Habits to Break While You Have Braces

Everyone has little habits they perform daily — walking the dog at exactly 8 a.m., ending their work daily by writing down tomorrow’s to-dos, or doing a bit of light reading before starting their homework. But what if we told you that some of your daily habits could be doing more harm than good?

If you’re a braces-wearer, there are several bad habits you should break to avoid doing damage to your teeth.

Bad Habits for Braces-Wearers

Chewing on Non-Food Items

Do you have a habit of biting down on your pen cap or chewing on your straw? Not good. Not only can chewing on non-food items mess with the alignment of your teeth, but it can also cause you to crack or chipped a tooth or cut your gums.

Thumb Sucking

While this typically occurs when children are younger before they have braces, thumb sucking can actually lead to your child needing braces. This is because the sucking motion can pull teeth forward and cause them to not develop properly as they grow in.

Biting Your Nails

Similar to chewing or biting non-food items, biting your nails can cause damage to your teeth as well as your braces. What’s worse is that this is a wildly popular bad habit that is performed by children and adults alike, so no age group is safe from harm if they bite their nails.

Drinking Colored Beverages

If you’re a big coffee drinker or your child enjoys red-colored sports beverage after a game, you may be causing major discolored to your teeth. The thing is, those colored drinks will only touch the spaces around your braces, so when you get them taken off, your teeth may be lighter in the areas your brackets covered.
