What Causes An Underbite?

Underbites can have a generally unnatural look about them and can cause
serious dental damage to anyone suffering from one. A relatively small
amount of people have varying degrees of underbites, and only about five
to ten percent of the population is affected by them. Here’s all
you need to know about underbites and the treatment options available
at Speaks Orthodontics.

Causes of Underbites

The cause of an underbite can be due to a variety of factors. These include:

  • Genetics

If your parents have an underbite, it’s more common you or your child
will have one as well.

  • Thumb sucking

Thumb sucking is forceful against the roof of the mouth and front of the
teeth, pushing the bottom jaw forward.

  • Extended use of a pacifier or bottle

Similar to thumb sucking, this it’s easy on the teeth and can change
the shape of the teeth and jaw.

  • Tongue pressing against the teeth

Often, people tend to subconsciously push the tongue against the teeth.
Thus can mess with the alignment and slowly move the jaw forward.

Common Treatments for Underbites

When it comes to fixing an underbite, there are several common treatments that orthodontists may recommend. One option is braces, which can help gradually shift the teeth and jaw into the correct position over time. Another option is clear aligners, such as Invisalign, which are a more discreet alternative to traditional braces.

In some cases, surgery may be necessary to correct a severe underbite. This typically involves repositioning the jaw to align it properly with the upper teeth. Your orthodontist will be able to assess your specific situation and recommend the best treatment plan for you.

Preventing Underbites in Children

While some causes of underbites, such as genetics, cannot be prevented, there are steps parents can take to reduce the risk of their child developing an underbite. Encouraging proper oral habits, such as avoiding thumb sucking and pacifier use, can help prevent the misalignment of the teeth and jaw.

Regular dental check-ups are also important for early detection and intervention if an underbite does develop. By working closely with your child's orthodontist, you can address any issues early on and prevent them from becoming more severe in the future.
